The 2026 Transceiver Compatibility Guide: Optimizing Modern Rigs
Updated: March 2026 | Full Support for 100+ Transceivers
Choosing a new transceiver is a major investment. Whether you are eyeing the latest SDR-based Icom or a high-performance Yaesu, the software you use to control that rig defines your operating experience. This guide covers how Ham Radio Deluxe v6.9 integrates with today's most popular radios to provide advanced CAT control, visual tuning, and automated logging.
Supported Manufacturers and Modern Features
Ham Radio Deluxe provides deep integration for the four major "blue chip" manufacturers. Our engineering team continuously updates our rig drivers to support the unique features of every model.
Icom: IC-7300, IC-7610, and IC-705
For Icom users, HRD offers full Panadapter (Spectrum) support for models that provide data over USB. This allows you to see the entire band and "point-and-click" to tune directly from your computer screen.
Yaesu: FTDX10, FT-710, and FTDX101D
Yaesu's modern line requires precise CAT control for split-operation and digital modes. HRD simplifies the setup process, managing your VFOs and PTT seamlessly, even on complex dual-receiver rigs.
Kenwood & Elecraft: TS-890S and K4
For the contest-grade performance of Kenwood and Elecraft, HRD Logbook and Rig Control provide the backbone for high-speed logging and award tracking, ensuring every rare DX contact is captured instantly.
Setting Up CAT Control: What to Expect with Modern Transceivers
Computer-Aided Transceiver (CAT) control is the foundation of the HRD experience — it's what allows Ham Radio Deluxe to read your frequency, switch bands, control PTT, and display a live Panadapter view synchronized to your rig. The setup process varies slightly by manufacturer, but most modern transceivers connect in under five minutes.
For Icom radios using CI-V protocol (including the IC-7300, IC-7610, and IC-9700), HRD auto-detects the CI-V address in most cases. Connect via USB, select your COM port in HRD Rig Control, and the radio identifies itself. The IC-7300 in particular benefits from HRD's Panadapter integration — the spectrum scope data feeds directly into HRD's display, giving you a full visual of band activity without needing a separate SDR receiver.
Yaesu radios using CAT-over-USB (FTDX10, FTDX101, FT-710) follow a similar process. One common setup note: make sure Yaesu's virtual COM port driver is installed before launching HRD, and confirm the baud rate in the radio's menu matches what HRD is configured to use. Mismatched baud rates are the most frequent cause of connection failures on Yaesu rigs.
Kenwood and Elecraft radios, popular with contesters and DXers for their deep CAT command sets, are among the best-supported rigs in HRD. Elecraft's K3, K3S, and KX3 support a full command set including VFO A/B control, band stacking, and filter bandwidth — all accessible from within HRD Rig Control without any additional configuration.
If your radio isn't connecting on the first attempt, the HRD Rig Control connection log (available under Tools > Connection Log) shows exactly which commands are being sent and received, making it easy to pinpoint whether the issue is a COM port conflict, a baud rate mismatch, or an unsupported CI-V address.
